This policy explains what data Amber Tides ("the game", "the site", "we") collects when you visit ambertides.co.uk or play the game in your browser or on Android, and your rights under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR. It's written to be read, not to hide things.
Who we are
Amber Tides is an independent, non-commercial game made by an individual developer in the United Kingdom, who is the "data controller" for the purposes of data-protection law. You can reach us at hello@ambertides.co.uk.
The short version
- No user accounts, logins or sign-ups — ever.
- No advertising and no advertising trackers.
- No analytics or tracking cookies. The site sets no cookies of its own.
- Your game progress is saved locally on your own device and is never sent to us.
- We don't sell, rent or share personal data. We have none to sell.
Your game saves
When you play, your progress (your beers, friendships, island and settings) is stored locally on your device — in your browser's local storage on the web, or in the app's private storage on Android. This data never leaves your device and is never transmitted to us or anyone else. Clearing your browser data, or uninstalling the app, deletes it.
Data handled when you load the site or app
We don't ask you for any personal information. However, like any website, simply loading the site or app means some technical data is processed by the services that deliver it — chiefly your IP address and basic request information. We use the following third-party providers:
- Cloudflare (hosting, content delivery, DNS and security) — processes connection data such as your IP address and request logs to serve the site and protect it from abuse.
- Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com / fonts.gstatic.com) — the site loads its typefaces from Google, which receives your IP address as part of that request.
- Cloudflare cdnjs — the site loads one animation library (GSAP) from this CDN, which receives your IP address to deliver the file.
- Capgo (Android app only) — the app checks for over-the-air game updates. To do so it contacts Capgo's update service and shares the app identifier, the installed version and a non-personal device/app identifier so the correct update can be delivered. It does not transmit your game saves or any personal information.
These providers act as our processors or as independent controllers for the technical data described above, under their own privacy policies.
Why we're allowed to do this (legal basis)
The limited technical processing above relies on our legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) in delivering, securing and maintaining the site and app — and, on Android, in being able to ship safe updates to a game you've installed. We've kept this to the minimum needed to make the game work.
International transfers
Some of the providers above (for example Google and Cloudflare) may process technical data on servers outside the UK or EEA. Where they do, they rely on appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or an adequacy decision.
How long data is kept
We don't keep any personal data ourselves. Our providers retain technical logs (such as security and delivery logs) for their own limited periods under their respective policies. Your game saves are kept on your device until you clear or delete them.
Children
Amber Tides is family-friendly and suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone, including children. As no account is created and no personal information is requested, the game does not build a profile of any player.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability. Because we hold no personal data about you, there is generally nothing for us to retrieve or delete — but you can still contact us with any request or question at hello@ambertides.co.uk.
If you have concerns about how technical data is handled, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, or your local EU/EEA supervisory authority.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how the site or game handles data (for example, if privacy-friendly analytics were added), we'll update this page and change the "last updated" date above.
